Nationally, US Employers added 142,000 jobs in August, and the unemployment rate fell from 4.3% to 4.2%, representing 7.1 million unemployed people. Average hourly pay rose 14 cents to $35.21, pushing up the yearly increase from 3.6% to 3.8%.

In California, the unemployment rate for August was 5.3%, which equates to 1,140,500 unemployed. That is up from 5.2% in July and even more from August 2023, which was 4.8%. Over the past year, California employers have added 287,100 nonfarm jobs. That averages out to 23,925 jobs gained per month since August 2023. Year-over, California’s job growth (+1.6 percent) has outpaced the nation's (+1.5 percent). Five of California's 11 industry sectors gained jobs in August with the largest increase occurring with Leisure & Hospitality (+6,800) led by gains in Accommodation and Food Services (+4,600). Private Education and Health Services (+4,900) also showed a noticeable increase with above-average gains in Ambulatory Health Care Services, Hospitals, and Nursing and Residential Care Facilities.

Government (-2,200) job losses were entirely in State Government (-17,200), while both Federal and Local Government continued to show job increases. Information (-5,100) posted the largest job loss, partly due to losses in the Motion Picture and Video Production industry as it restructures after last year’s strike.

Labor Statistics

An establishment is an economic unit, such as a factory, mine, store, or office that produces goods or services. It generally is at a single location and is engaged predominantly in one type of economic activity. Where a single location encompasses two or more distinct activities, these are treated as separate establishments, if separate payroll records are available, and the various activities are classified under different industry codes.

These graphs are compiled by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis from data gathered by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Go to their website to find even further breakdowns of economic data for Plumas County.
